In 1870s California, a cowboy named Lincoln 'Linc' Bartlett discovers a slave auction of Chinese women in San Francisco and purchases Kim Sung, intending to set her free. However, he realizes that freedom alone is not enough, as Kim doesn't speak English and will likely be exploited by others. Linc decides to take Kim home to serve as a housekeeper, which leads to tensions with his mother, Ma Bartlett, who disapproves of a Chinese girl living in their home. As Kim and Linc grow closer, their relationship sparks jealousy in Cheng Lu, a Chinese immigrant.
