Summer 1943, a small seaside resort in Italy, Raccione near Rimini, is enjoying a carefree summer. The war is spreading northwards, but the residents are still unaware of the danger. Carlo Caremoli, who avoided military service, spends his days plundering the black market and having fun with his friends. One day, he meets Roberta, a woman whose husband was killed in the war, and they start a passionate summer romance. Despite their differences, including Roberta's age and her daughter, their love is strong. However, their happiness is short-lived as Carlo is soon drafted into the military. Roberta refuses to accept this and decides to flee with Carlo to save their love.
