A small-town mayor, Anne Crandall, navigates a series of challenges after her husband's statue is damaged in a lightning strike. She travels to New York to interview a prospective sculptor, George Corday, but gets caught up in a nightclub raid and is mistaken for a stripper, leading to a scandal. Back in her hometown, she tries to keep the situation under wraps, but Corday shows up and uses the scandal to blackmail her into accepting his advances, further complicating her life with her step-daughter and her boyfriend.
