In the New England town of Lochester, a high-school teacher, Nora Shelley, takes in three unlikely roommates at her rental house. A renowned Harvard law professor, Michael Lightcap, is writing a new book and hires Nora as his live-in cook and secretary. The third roommate is Joseph, the property's gardener, who is actually Nora's childhood friend Leopold Dilg, an activist who has just escaped from prison after being wrongly accused of arson and murder.
