In 1940, Colonel Dufort and his wife arrive in Timbuktu to take over the French garrison, but their presence sparks a Tuareg uprising inspired by a kidnapped holy man. As tensions rise, the colonel's wife becomes embroiled in an affair with an American gunrunner, Mike Conway, who learns the holy man's true fate at the hands of an evil emir.
