Margaret Patterson, a widow, faces the challenges of raising her three sons on a limited income. As they grow older, each son exhibits selfish and irresponsible behavior: Charley can't hold a job to focus on his trombone practice, Eddie claims to be a sports promoter with no real accomplishments, and Kenneth struggles as an actor. When they must register for the pre-War draft, each son concocts new excuses and ailments to avoid being drafted into the Army.
