Dr. MacAuley, a country doctor, is sent to Fillmore Prison after removing a bullet from a young man he had brought into the world. He works in the jute mill after being denied a spot in the hospital. When Lindstrom, a co-worker, suffers a heart attack, Dr. MacAuley administers adrenaline, saving his life. News spreads, and MacAuley is flooded with requests for help from fellow inmates. Lindstrom, suffering greatly, begs MacAuley to end his life, offering $10,000 hidden outside the prison. MacAuley refuses, but later, Lindstrom is found dead.
