In 1950s French Indochina, a family of French colonists struggles to survive amidst economic hardship. The Dufresne family's rice farm is their only asset, and they are repeatedly asked to sell it, but the mother refuses. Her children, Joseph and Suzanne, have different dreams: Joseph wants to leave the country for the city, while Suzanne falls for a drifter. Meanwhile, the family's farm is threatened by a tropical storm that destroys their rice fields, leaving them with no choice but to accept a low offer from a local tycoon. The mother urges Suzanne to marry the tycoon to save the farm, but Suzanne's heart belongs to the drifter. The siblings must decide between their desires and helping their mother.
