A struggling ex-seaman, Clinton Jones, is forced to re-evaluate his life after losing his job, while his ambitious daughter Ruth pursues her dreams of becoming an actress. However, her aspirations are put to the test when she spurns the advances of a suitor, Fred Whitmarsh.
