Dr. Faraday, a country doctor, returns to Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked, to care for a patient in the long, hot summer of 1948. The once-grand estate, home to the Ayres family for over two centuries, is now in decline and its inhabitants are haunted by a sense of foreboding.
