The Cardinal background

The Cardinal

A devout priest from Boston faces challenges of prejudice, fascist ideology, and inner turmoil as he ascends to the prestigious position of cardinal.

Stephen Fermoyle, a young priest from Boston, returns to America after completing his studies in Rome, determined to rise through the Catholic Church hierarchy to become a Cardinal. However, his journey is marked by numerous crises, including a decision to save his sister's life or that of her unborn child, conceived out of wedlock, and a choice between remaining in the priesthood or pursuing a romantic relationship. He also faces the church's indifference to racial bigotry and becomes entangled in its dealings with the Third Reich.
