Captain Horatio Hornblower leads the HMS Lydia on a perilous voyage around Cape Horn and into the Pacific, hiding his destination from his crew. The ship arrives on the Pacific coast of Central America, where Hornblower is tasked with arming Don Julian Alvarado for an attack against France's Spanish allies. However, the Spanish and England soon become allies, forcing Hornblower to take back the captured Spanish Galleon from Alvarado. Meanwhile, Hornblower develops a romantic connection with Lady Barbara Wellesley, sister of the Duke of Wellington, despite being married and her being engaged.
