Patrick Martin, a wealthy attorney and rancher, returns home to find his brother Donald hiding in his garage. Donald had been sent to prison five years earlier for killing a man in a barroom brawl, but claims it was self-defense. Donald has escaped and wants Patrick's help to cross the flooded Santa Cruz River into Mexico, where his wife and children are struggling to survive.
