Eddie Willis, a renowned sports journalist, loses his job after 17 years and is hired by a prominent fight promoter to promote a new heavyweight fighter, Toro Moreno. Despite recognizing Toro's lack of potential, Eddie is drawn in by the lucrative salary and unlimited expenses. The promoter's plan is to rig a series of fights against weak opponents, ultimately leading to a title bout against the heavyweight champion, Buddy Brannen, to reap a significant profit. As the scheme unfolds, a tragic ring fatality and Eddie's growing unease force him to confront the morality of his new profession.
