Three years into the American Civil War, a dilapidated mansion in Virginia is home to a seminary for young ladies, occupied by the headmistress, a teacher, and five students. When a wounded Union deserter stumbles in, the balance is disrupted, and the headmistress decides to take him in. As he recovers, the women become increasingly attracted to him, leading to a competition for his attention.
