In the midst of World War II, submarine commander Ken White is compelled to abandon his captain and another crew member, sealing their fate outside the sub. The trauma of this event haunts him for years, as he's relegated to mundane shore duties and plagued by the resentment of a former sailor. As his life unravels, his wife threatens to leave him. Just as all hope seems lost, Ken is thrust into a perilous rescue mission at the outset of the Korean War, only to find himself back on the same submarine where his woes began.
