Tom Cardigan, a lawyer, is unhappy with his role as a mob mouthpiece for Vanny Powers. When he takes June Perry as his mistress, she tries to redeem him, but Powers decides to make Tom the District Attorney instead. Tom's ambition leads him to abandon June for the daughter of political boss Ulric. However, the crisis arises when Powers goes on trial for murder, with June being the key witness.
