Terry, the chief car tester for Emery Motors, and Frank, an engineer, both have their eyes on Jane, the new publicity hire. Meanwhile, Terry's new carburetor design is struggling to work correctly, despite years of testing with Gadget. When Frank is assigned to help Terry perfect the carburetor, tensions rise due to their competing interests. Despite this, they manage to finish the project, and to test its limits, they enter a car in the Indianapolis 500 race.

An automotive test driver, aided by his mechanic buddy, an engineer, and the company's new publicist, endeavours to create a revolutionary carburetor by racing cars in the Indy 500 and high-speed trials at California's Muroc Dry Lake.
