A former Confederate soldier returns to his hometown of Abilene, only to discover that everyone believes he's dead. He's reunited with his old friend, who's now engaged to the man's former sweetheart. As tensions rise between the town's cattlemen and farmers, the former sheriff is persuaded to take up the role again, but his friend is haunted by a secret from their time in the war.
