Two shoeshine boys, Pasquale and Giuseppe, dream of owning their own horse. They meet Attilio, Giuse's older brother, who involves them in a black-market scheme. The boys agree to deliver goods to a fortuneteller, but Attilio's gang steals the payment. With the help of a commission, the boys finally buy their horse and stable it in Trastevere. However, the fortuneteller reveals their identities, and the boys are separated at a crowded boys' prison.
