Shame background

Shame

A couple, once skilled violinists, struggle to maintain a peaceful existence on a rural island farm amidst the chaos of a civil war, as their tumultuous marriage is tested by the war's constant presence in their lives.

Two musicians abandon their city life to start a farm on a rural island during a civil war. Despite their peaceful existence, their relationship is tested by the war's disruptions, including Jan's emotional sensitivity and Eva's desire for children. When the rebels attack, they are arrested as collaborators, but are eventually released by a local colonel who begins to visit them. As the war rages on, Jan's behavior becomes increasingly violent, and the couple is forced to flee, leaving them to wonder if they can escape and find a new sense of purpose.
