A Czech immigrant, Karel Novak, arrives in America, only to find the entrance fee to Ellis Island has increased. Unable to pay, he jumps off a ship and swims to Manhattan, losing his wallet in the process. Despite the setbacks, Karel is thrilled by the city's skyscrapers, cars, and opulence. He befriends a chorus girl, Sylvia Dennis, and finds work as a newspaper seller and taxi driver. As romance blossoms, Karel proposes to Sylvia, but his illegal status threatens to tear them apart. He seeks the help of a lawyer, who ultimately betrays him for financial gain.
