Alexander Portnoy, a mid-level bureaucrat in the New York City mayor's office, is a neurotic man in his 30s whose life is shaped by his Jewish upbringing and guilt. Portnoy's thoughts and actions are centered around sex, and he regularly attends therapy sessions to work through his issues.
