Successful artist Phillip Gayley and his ex-wife Ellen, a former Gayley Girl, are co-parenting their 7-year-old daughter Flip. Despite their divorce, they still have strong feelings for each other and want to reconcile. Their mutual friend Luigi tries to help them get back together, but their path to happiness is complicated by the presence of Ellen's new lawyer boyfriend Rex, Flip's pen pal Corporal Fenwick, and the lingering tensions between Ellen and her mother.
