An injured American serviceman, suffering from amnesia, boards a military hospital ship returning to the US. With no memory of his identity, the Army searches for his true identity, assuming he's one of four men found in a French farmhouse after a Nazi bombing. As the ship docks, the man, who calls himself Johnny March, goes AWOL to find answers on his own, visiting the homes of the four men whose dog tags were found.
