A chance encounter between Hélène, a troubled anesthetist, and Gilles, a working-class man, sets off a complex chain of events. Still reeling from the loss of her architect lover, Hélène finds herself drawn to Gilles, but their social differences threaten to tear them apart. As their relationship deepens, Gilles's own insecurities and fixation on Hélène's late lover create tension, forcing Hélène to confront her grief and the future of their love.
