In 1858-9, a small Pennsylvania town becomes the backdrop for a dramatic tale of love and adversity. Stranded after a fire destroys their traveling medicine show, Sally Watterson and her father find solace with Mrs. Cortlandt and her grandson Peter, who's driven to succeed in his ambitious oil pipeline project. As Sally and Peter fall deeply in love, they face numerous challenges in their marriage and Peter's endeavors to bring his vision to life.
