On San Francisco's vibrant Barbary Coast, a group of entertainers, including Trudy Evans and Johnnie Cornell, try to make a name for themselves. After being fired from their job, they stage a series of street carnivals that attract crowds and bring in money. Johnnie's success leads him to open a new saloon, The Grizzly Bear, which becomes a sensation. He eventually marries Bernice Crodt, a high-society woman, and abandons his entertainment career to pursue opera. However, his fortunes decline, and he is left with nothing. Trudy returns to find Johnnie struggling and tries to help him, but he refuses to hire her for his show.
