A young pilot, Ens. Alan Drake, joins the elite Hellcats Squadron after completing flight school. He faces an inauspicious start when he's forced to ditch his plane and parachute due to heavy fog. Drake's struggles continue on his first mission, where his poor shooting skills lead to the team's loss in an air combat competition. Despite his teammates' initial acceptance, they turn against him when they mistakenly believe he's having an affair with his commanding officer's wife, Lorna. Feeling ostracized, Drake considers resigning from the Navy, but his bravery in saving his CO's life ultimately redeems him.
