In 1865, a former Confederate Captain and his daughter travel through Nevada on their way to Oregon when they stop at a way-station where Union soldiers are enjoying a meal. The patrol is escorting an Army payroll and two sisters, one of whom is engaged to the patrol's captain. Tensions rise when the former Confederate officer is asked to be arrested, but the patrol commander dismisses the suggestion. Unbeknownst to them, Modocs have set up an ambush and surrounded the patrol. The former Confederate officer and his daughter set up camp for the night, only to discover drunken Modoc Indians carrying liquor jugs, leading them to believe the way-station has been attacked.
