In the 1962-set film, a carefree teenager named Angela is forced to reevaluate her priorities after a near-death experience. Her school counselor recommends she work with a tutor, Wayne, to improve her grades and future prospects. As they spend more time together, Angela develops feelings for Wayne, but her boyfriend Duke becomes possessive and jealous. After a tragic accident, Angela finds herself in purgatory, where she meets her deceased counselor who tasks her with returning to Earth to help someone. Back in the living world, Angela befriends Cindy, who is infatuated with a popular boy, and helps her achieve her goal. Along the way, Angela discovers Wayne's loneliness and tries to set him up with her best friend Judith, but Duke's possessiveness creates complications.
