A reporter in Moscow, posing as "Comrade X," smuggles uncensored news while being discovered by a hotel valet who blackmails him into helping his daughter escape the country. Along the way, the reporter falls for the daughter, but must convince her of his sincerity amidst the grim and farcical anti-communist humor.
