Lee Israel, a struggling biographer, has hit rock bottom. Her writing career is stagnant, and she's burnt bridges with her agent and the literary community. To make ends meet, she starts selling celebrity memorabilia and eventually becomes embroiled in a fraudulent scheme, creating and selling fake documents attributed to famous writers. She partners with her old acquaintance Jack Hock, and as their financial troubles disappear, Lee's moral compass begins to waver.
