Peter Standish inherits a house on Berkeley Square in London and discovers a special bond with the property. He finds a diary belonging to one of his ancestors, Peter Standish, an American officer who lived in the house in 1784. According to the diary, Peter's ancestor walked into the house at 5:30pm on September 3, and Peter believes he is destined to follow in his footsteps. He learns that he must be careful not to change history and must limit his use of modern language and idioms. As Peter navigates his new reality, he must also navigate his own wedding plans in the present day and the meaning of certain symbols of eternal love.
