A small-time hustler, Bill O'Brian, sees a man, Charles Engle, who has embezzled and is wandering the town, and plans to take him to a high-stakes card game to swindle him. Meanwhile, a struggling playwright, Gene Gibbons, discovers Engle's suicide note and concocts a plan to help him pay back his employer and save his life, with O'Brian reluctantly assisting.
