Bertha Jacoby, a widow from a predominantly Jewish Brooklyn neighborhood, is forced to leave her comfort zone when her son-in-law and daughter move to Tokyo for a diplomatic assignment. She reluctantly agrees to join them, despite her anti-Japanese sentiments stemming from her son's death in World War II. On the ship, she befriends Koichi Asano, a wealthy Japanese businessman, and they form a deeper connection that transcends their cultural differences.
