Fran Fine, a Jewish woman from Flushing, New York, finds herself jobless and recently dumped by her boyfriend. Mistakenly, she applies for a nanny position with widowed Maxwell Sheffield, who has three children, Maggie, Brighton, and Grace. Despite initially being a cosmetics saleswoman, Fran becomes a great friend to the butler, Niles, and the children, while also developing a close bond with Maxwell, which eventually sparks romantic feelings.
