In 1950s Montana, a teenage boy named Joe struggles with the emotional turmoil of his parents' divorce. His father, Jerry, loses his job and refuses to return to work, instead taking a job fighting a forest fire. Joe's mother, Jeanette, is devastated and worries about her husband's safety and potential infidelity. Despite Jerry's return from the fire unscathed, the family remains unhappy, and Jeanette starts a new relationship. The parents eventually separate, with Jeanette moving to Oregon for a teaching job and Joe staying with his father.
