Boston native Jeff Bauman, who works at a Costco deli counter and lives with his mother, meets his ex-girlfriend Erin at a local bar. Erin is running in the Boston Marathon to raise money for her hospital and Jeff promises to wait at the finish line with a sign. On the day of the Marathon, a bomb explodes near Jeff, who is rushed to the hospital and has both legs amputated above the knee.
