In Brooklyn, Vinnie, a seasoned bookie, faces a crisis when his operation is threatened by a demand for higher profits from his superiors. As a result, Vinnie becomes expendable and is replaced by Tony, a hot-headed young man who is the nephew of a local mobster. Tony is tasked with learning the ropes from Vinnie, who is expected to teach him the ins and outs of the business and help him become a successful collector. However, tensions rise when Tony begins to disregard Vinnie's paternalistic approach and takes a bet from an unemployed alcoholic, which puts the loser's wife in a difficult situation.
