Chicago-based Emma Lowell, an art history professor, spends two months in Padua, Italy researching the origins of an antique lace wedding veil, said to bring true love to its possessor. The veil's history begins with a 19th-century painting by Amici, and Emma discovers it originated from a family lace shop on Burano. She meets Paolo Di Stefano, the next generation of the lace-making family, who joins her in uncovering the veil's history. As they fall for each other, they must decide if their love is strong enough to overcome the distance between them.
