A young boy named Tom loses his parents and home in the Nazi bombing of Rotterdam. He finds a new home on a Friesian farm with his uncle Tjerk and forms a strong bond with a shepherd puppy given to him by the farmhand Bauke. Despite his uncle's concerns, Tom becomes increasingly reckless in his desire for revenge against the German occupation forces, putting himself and others at risk.
