In 19th century Louisiana, the Maxwell plantation is in decline, and son Hammond is under pressure to marry and produce a male heir to secure the family legacy. He chooses his cousin Blanche, who agrees to escape her sadistic brother. On their honeymoon, Hammond buys a slave, Ellen, as a sexual partner, and a Mandingo slave, Mede, to breed with their female slaves. However, Hammond uses Mede in brutal slave fighting, often to the death, and becomes unsatisfied with his marriage to Blanche, preferring Ellen.
