Joe Palooka in the Big Fight background

Joe Palooka in the Big Fight

A boxer is falsely accused of murder and a DUI by a group of gangsters, who intend to use the incident to replace him with their own fighter in a high-stakes competition.

A down-and-out fighter, "Dutch" Grady, poses as a boxer and defeats heavyweight champion Joe Palooka in a training bout. This sparks a series of jeers from a sports reporter, calling for Grady to get a title match. Despite initial refusal, Palooka's manager agrees to the match after criticism affects box-office receipts. However, on the eve of the bout, Grady's manager and others conspire to drug Palooka, and his title is vacated. The champion is then accused of murder when a beauty contest winner is found dead, leading to a complex and intriguing plot.
