In the film, a newspaper reporter named Curt Devlin is torn between his love for his colleague Ellen Garfield and his bias against women in the profession. When Ellen discovers the identity of a murdered arsonist, Curt dismisses it as luck. As she investigates further, Curt gathers enough evidence to have the suspect arrested, but Ellen inadvertently publishes an incorrect story based on "not guilty" ballots. Curt eavesdrops on the jury to uncover the truth, leading to his own firing. Undeterred, Ellen ultimately secures a confession from the real killer, exonerating the wrongly accused Maitland Coulter.
