In the 1960s, three former prisonmates - Carlito Brigante, an Italian-American, Earl, an African-American, and Rocco, a Puerto Rican - form an unlikely bond. After their release, Rocco facilitates a heroin deal with the Italian Mafia, led by Artie Badalato Sr. Carlito negotiates with Leroy "Hollywood Nicky" Barnes to operate in his neighborhood, and the trio quickly gains power. Carlito also begins an affair with Leticia, a beautiful woman. However, when Earl decides to leave the heroin trade to move to Barbados with his girlfriend, his younger brother's reckless actions spark a conflict with the Italian mob, forcing Carlito and Rocco to intervene and save their lives.
