Yasuaki Kurata, also known as David Kurata, is a renowned Japanese actor who has made a name for himself in the action movie genre. Born on March 20, 1946, Kurata is a skilled martial artist holding dan ranks in karate (5th degree),judo (3rd degree),and aikido (2nd degree).
Kurata is perhaps most famous for his intense battle against Jet Li in the film Fist of Legend, as well as his villainous role in the movie So Close. Additionally, he is fluent in Cantonese, demonstrating his versatility as a performer.
Born in Sakura-mura, Niihari District, Ibaraki (now part of Tsukuba),Kurata began his journey in the performing arts by studying at Nihon University and Toei Theater School. He started his acting career in the late 1960s and made his Hong Kong debut in the Shaw Brothers Studio kung-fu movie Angry Guest in 1971.
Since then, Kurata has appeared in numerous films and TV series within the action genre. In addition to his work as an actor, Kurata is also the founder and operator of the stunt agency Kurata Promotion, which he established in 1976 under the name Kurata Action Club. He also teaches at the University of Creation, Art, Music & Social Work and serves as the chief advisor to the All Japan Nunchaku League.
In 2004, Kurata published a book titled Hong Kong Action Star Kōyūroku, showcasing his extensive knowledge and experience in the world of action cinema.
