Sally Anne Wainwright OBE, a talented English television writer, producer, and director, was born in 1963. Her remarkable career is characterized by the creation of captivating dramas, often set in her native West Yorkshire, which feature complex and strong female characters. Wainwright's exceptional dialogue has earned her widespread acclaim.
Starting her professional journey as a scriptwriter for the renowned radio serial drama The Archers, Wainwright subsequently worked on the television soap operas Emmerdale and Coronation Street during the 1990s. Her debut original drama, At Home with the Braithwaites, premiered between 2000 and 2003. Following two self-proclaimed "flops" in the mid-2000s, Wainwright's creative output was revitalized with the success of Unforgiven, which earned her the prestigious Royal Television Society's Writer of the Year Award in 2009.
Wainwright's extensive portfolio includes the critically acclaimed Scott & Bailey, which aired from 2011 to 2016, Last Tango in Halifax, which ran from 2012 to 2020, Happy Valley, which concluded its six-season run in 2023, and Gentleman Jack, which aired from 2019 to 2022. Last Tango in Halifax won the British Academy Television Award for Best Drama Series in 2013, while Happy Valley claimed the same honor in both 2015 and 2017.
