Roopa Ganguly, a multifaceted Indian actress, playback singer, and politician, was born on November 25, 1966. Her most iconic role to date is undoubtedly that of Draupadi in the hit television series Mahabharat, directed by B R Chopra, which premiered in 1988. Often regarded as the Bengali Film Industry's response to the renowned Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi, Roopa is celebrated for her remarkable versatility and uncanny ability to adapt to various accents.
Throughout her illustrious career, Roopa has had the privilege of collaborating with some of the most esteemed directors in Indian cinema, including Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghose, and Rituparno Ghosh. Her extensive range extends beyond acting, as she is also a trained Rabindra Sangeet vocalist and a classical dancer.
Roopa's impressive repertoire of awards and accolades includes a National Award and two BFJA Awards. In October 2015, she was honored with a nomination as a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, by the President of India. Additionally, she has held various leadership positions within the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal, serving as the President, and has also been the General Secretary and Vice President of the West Bengal Motion Picture Artistes' Forum, a prominent organization representing cine artistes.
