Jack Roy, also known as Rodney Dangerfield, was an American comedian, actor, screenwriter, and producer. Born Jacob Rodney Cohen on November 22, 1921, he was a renowned figure in the entertainment industry.
Dangerfield's career began in the 1960s as a stand-up comic at the Fantasy Lounge in New York City. His popularity grew as he became a regular on late-night talk shows and eventually headlined at Las Vegas casinos.
The comedian's signature catchphrase "I don't get no respect!" originated from an attempt to improve one of his stand-up jokes. He tried "I get no respect," which received a better response from the audience, and it became a staple of his act and persona.
Throughout the 1970s, Dangerfield appeared in small film roles, including The Projectionist. His breakthrough film role came in 1980 as a boorish golfer in the comedy Caddyshack. He went on to star in two more successful films: Easy Money in 1983 and Back to School in 1986.
Dangerfield continued to work in film throughout his life, primarily in comedies, but also took on a rare dramatic role in 1994's Natural Born Killers as an abusive father.
Dangerfield's life and career are a testament to his enduring impact on the entertainment industry.
